259 Shades of Grey

This is Magicat.  She was sitting on a small rail inside the doorway, with the door open behind her.  The photo turned out too dark for much detail of her, but too bright behind her (the door had the sun on it and it’s white).  So, I played around with the photo, and this was the result.  I love Photoshop!

  1. Great photo for the theme. You are so lucky to have photoshop.I wish it weren’t so expensive.

    • It is a bit expensive, but I lucked out. I bought it from a discount website (something I don’t normally do–trustPrice.com) just before CS4 was coming out. Mine is even the Extended version, although I do not care about the animation part and have not experimented much with it. They were out of Photoshop CS3, so they sent the Photoshop CS3 Extended in its place. (The Extended is considerably more expensive than the Photoshop version alone.) I paid less than $300 for it.

  2. did you do this in full PS, or Elements? I like how it came out – nice way to shave the shot.

    • I think I did this one in CS3 (it’s the latest one I have. They are expensive, and I don’t think I need to spend the money to upgrade each time. The one I have works great!) All I did was paint the light areas white and the dark areas black, and then drew a black and white radial gradient from the top left corner to the bottom right one. It’s in both PSE and CS, so the method would be identical in either. (I was in Photoshop doing something unrelated to the Challenge, and I decided to play with this photo to see if it might be salvageable somehow or other.)

      • thanks for outlining the steps. It does sound like it can be achieved in Elements. I’ll have to play around with it.

  3. Eerie silhouette.

  4. Now that is an awesome silhouette!

  5. You did a good job fixing this pic! The tonal transition between the black and gray is great.

  6. even though its all dark I sense he/she is looking straight at you. Great for the theme
